Artists from the Office of Cultural Affairs Community Artist Program to perform prior to select concerts

Dallas, TX (March 28, 2018) — The Dallas Symphony Orchestra (DSO) announces the annual Parks Concert series, presented by Bank of America. These family-friendly concerts are FREE and open to the public and will be presented in Dallas-area parks stretching from North to South Dallas. Assistant Conductor Ruth Reinhardt will lead the DSO in a program featuring light classics, patriotic tunes and other popular fare.

“We are proud to serve our community with these concerts,” said Kim Noltemy, Dallas Symphony Association President & CEO. “It is a joy to meet our neighbors and share in the excitement of great music. We are grateful to our presenting sponsor Bank of America, and to the Office of Cultural Affairs for allowing us to expand our reach this year with a fifth concert.”

“Bank of America has a long history of supporting access to the arts in North Texas,” said Richard Holt, Dallas Market President for Bank of America. “We’re proud to be the presenting sponsor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra Parks Concerts and value this collaboration to create even more access to inspiring music through these free and open concerts in our community.”

The 2018 Parks Concerts kick off with the annual Memorial Day concert and fireworks display at Flag Pole Hill Park on May 28. This year’s event is part of the DSO’s Nancy A. Nasher and David J. Haemisegger Family SOLUNA International Music & Arts Festival.

Subsequent performances will be presented at Timberglen Park (May 31), Crawford Memorial Park (June 5), Kidd Springs Park (June 8) and on the campus of Paul Quinn College (June 12).

Artists from the City of Dallas’s Office of Cultural Affairs’ Community Artist Program (CAP) will perform prior to select Parks Concerts. CAP provides funding to ethnic and culturally specific individual artists and cultural organizations to teach, perform and exhibit at host facilities in neighborhoods around the City of Dallas.

CAP pre-concert performers at this year’s Parks Concerts:

  • Len Barnett/Percussion Things Rhythm Connections will take the stage at Crawford Memorial Park on June 5. Percussion Things uses traditional and modern rhythms and spoken word in a fast-paced, fun and entertaining program using jazz, AfroLatin and AfroCaribbean rhythms and music along with traditional folktales and legends.
  • Anita N. Martinez Ballet Folklorico will perform at Kidd Springs Park on June 8. Ballet Folklorico’s dance performances depict the unique history, costumes, art and music of Mexico.
  • The South Dallas Concert Choir (SDCC) will perform at Paul Quinn College on June 12. SDCC provides a unique opportunity to enhance the cultural life of the community by educating, performing and preserving the Negro Spiritual in its original form.

The 2018 Dallas Symphony Orchestra Parks Concerts are presented by Bank of America with additional generous support from ExxonMobil, Cigna, Methodist Dallas Medical Center, the Office of Cultural Affairs and Nordstrom. All concerts are free and open to the public. For more information, visit mydso.com or call 214.TIX.4DSO.
